Earthquake in Kumamoto area on July 28, Kyushu JAPAN
As you may be aware by the news on the media, a strong earthquake occurred in Kumamoto Prefecture, in central Kyushu, Japan, on July 28, 2026, at 16:27 (JST). We have been closely monitoring the situation and are seeing steady progress in recovery and restoration efforts. Please note that Kumamoto is located approximately 1,000 kilometers (about 620 miles) southwest of Tokyo, the capital of Japan.
All Groups and Individuals travelling in Japan, handled by JTBGMT, are all confirmed as “safe without any injury” and will continue their remaining journey.
Currently, daily life and tourism activities continue as normal throughout the vast majority of Japan. With the exception of certain affected areas, major tourist destinations, public transportation, and accommodations are operating as usual.
