Matsushima:
Approximately 40 minutes from JR Sendai station to JR Matsushima-kaigan Station on the JR Senseki Line

Hiraizumi, Motsu-ji Temple, Chuson-ji Temple (Iwate Prefecture):
Take the JR Tohoku Shinkansen from JR Sendai Station to JR Ichinoseki Station, then transfer from JR Ichinoseki Station to JR Hiraizumi Station on the JR Tohoku Line (approximately 1 hours)

Tsuruoka, Mt. Haguro (Yamagata Prefecture):
Take the express bus from JR Sendai Station to JR Tsuruoka Station S-Mall bus terminal (approximately 3 hours)

Furukuchi, Mogamigawa River (Yamagata Prefecture):
Take the JR Tohoku Shinkansen from JR Sendai Station to JR Fukukawa Station, then transfer from JR Furukawa Station to JR Shinjo Station on the JR Rikuu East Line and transfer from JR Shinjo Station to JR Furukuchi Station on the JR Rikuu West Line (approximately 3 hours)

Hiraizumi, Registered World Heritage Site
Hiraizumi, a registered World Heritage Site, was founded by the Osh-Fujiwara clan and protected by Date Masamune and the Date family who ruled this region to allow for the preservation of the temples. The representation of the ideal world based on Buddhism in Hiraizumi is very unique.
Take the Tohoku Shinkansen to Ichinoseki Station and transfer to the JR Tohoku Line to Hiraizumi Station (7-minute train ride).
Thanks to the protection across generations of Date family who ruled Hiraizumi region, including the first lord, Date Masamune, who was introduced as the bronze statue of Aoba Castle, the ruins of Chuson-ji Temple and Motsu-ji Temple were able to be handed down to the present.

The Konjikido (Golden Hall) was designated a National Treasure, one of the first in Japan, and is the only building which remains from the original structure. This small hall is dedicated to Amida Nyorai (the Buddha of Infinite Light) and apart from the roof, is covered with gold leaf both inside and out. About 10 minutes on the Hiraizumi Loop Bus "Run-Run" from Hiraizumi Station to Chuson-ji Temple.

The Pure Land Garden is arranged such that the temple, garden, and pond are unified as one. Its beauty remains essentially unchanged for eight centuries, blending harmoniously with the surrounding trees to form an eternal landscape. In the old times, water transportation flourished on Mogamigawa River and carried local products such as rice to Kansai area. Mogamigawa River is a famous sightseeing spot for its magnificent gorge. People can appreciate different landscapes of the four seasons, especially the fresh green in June and July and the snow from December to March. Taking the boat equipped with Kotatsu (Japanese table with a built-in heater and a blanket that covers all four sides) in winter is recommended.

Mt. Haguro, one of the three religious mountains of Dewa, is known as a sacred place in the Tohoku region where mountain priests used to train and practice. Omotesando (front approach) is 1.7 km with 2,446 stone steps and a line of cedar trees 350 to 500 years old on both sides.
Mt. Haguro was given three stars in the Michelin Green Guide Japan for its great scenery, attracting many tourists. Located in the middle of the cedar trees is the five-storied pagoda, a national treasure. This area is also a recommended hiking tour.
