Kaga Maki-e, the Distinctive Art in Kanazawa
When applied by the skilled hands of one who has years of experience and fine eye for detail and design, endless layers of lacquer can bring a sheen to gold leaf like no other. In collaborations with a Swiss manufacturer of luxury clocks, this workshop has broken through the barriers imposed by traditional forms to create new products, including items such as fountain pens, with this time-honored handicraft. The city of Kanazawa is one of the best places to experience all aspects of traditional Japanese culture, and what better way to enjoy a visit as well as appreciate the beauty of Kaga gold lacquer than to share a drink of sake with a “geiko” entertainer using cups created using this technique at a “chaya” salon while dressed in a beautiful kimono.
