When applied by the skilled hands of one who has years of experience and fine eye for detail and design, endless layers of lacquer can bring a sheen to gold leaf like no other. In collaborations with a Swiss manufacturer of luxury clocks, this workshop has broken through the barriers imposed by traditional forms to create new products, including items such as fountain pens, with this time-honored handicraft. The city of Kanazawa is one of the best places to experience all aspects of traditional Japanese culture, and what better way to enjoy a visit as well as appreciate the beauty of Kaga gold lacquer than to share a drink of sake with a “geiko” entertainer using cups created using this technique at a “chaya” salon while dressed in a beautiful kimono. |
