yasajiSpring is almost here, but the weather is still chilly. Even though it is too early for flowers to bloom, Japan has already started planning for the upcoming cherry-blossom viewing season! From late March to early May, the entire country is dyed in a light pink hue and cherry blossom viewing, or "hanami", becomes everyone's favorite pursuit. Some may enjoy a simple, quiet stroll down a tree-lined boulevard, but many throw boisterous parties and picnics under the cherry trees.

Everyone in Japan pays attention to the forecast so they don't miss this exciting spring event; not the weather forecast, yasajibut the "cherry blossom forecast". Every year the Japan Meteorological Agency announces its blossom forecast, or "sakurazensen", which predicts when the cherry blossoms will start blooming at major cherry blossom viewing sites across Japan. Updates are also regularly made on the current extent of blossoming.


yasajiAccording to Japan Weather Association, spring is expected to be warmer this year, and the cherry blossoms may bloom earlier than usual. Japan stretches over 3000km from north to south and the climate differs greatly from region to region, meaning that cherry blossoms can be enjoyed at different times in different locations. Keep an eye out for the blossom forecast so you don't miss the flowers in their full glory!
