Interest in Japanese pop culture has exploded overseas in recent years. It is so highly appreciated that the word "cool" is applied quite liberally when it comes to Japanese anime, manga, movies, food, and fashion.
What products are especially cool at the moment?
In a national souvenir contest held
recently,
the gold award for the Cool Japan category went to, wait for it...
an eraser!
It seems that Japanese erasers are in fact pretty cool!
The Saitama company Iwako produces erasers with fun designs such as sushi, snacks, desserts, stationery and more! The judges were most impressed by the artistic quality of Iwako's erasers. Parts are assembled separately by color and are made of environmentally friendly recyclable materials, which makes them safe in addition to cool. They are almost too good to be used as erasers!
Collecting erasers is not just for kids.
Why not bring back some sushi, tempura and noodles back home with you? They might be erasers, but they are very cool indeed. Best of all, they're affordable: the Tempura eraser costs just 50 yen! |

Ninja, sumo and a green tea; all are synonymous with Japan. For those that don't know, Ninja were secret agents that wore distinctive black outfits in feudal Japan, sumo wrestling is the national sport and green tea, inseparable from daily life in Japan, is loved all over the world.
A new brand of organic green tea goes by the names "Ninja Green Teah and gSumo Green
Tea",
and this tea recently
won an award at the
National Souvenir Contest 2008.
Names like those are sure to make anyone curious about their taste. The tea is produced by Maruyama Tea
Products in Shizuoka, the home of green tea.
Not only does it taste great, but there is a little trick to the package: it is a form of origami (traditional paper craft art) that can be folded into a ninja star or a yokozuna (the highest ranked sumo wrestler). There are instructions on the package for those who might not be sure where to make the folds.
This fun, healthy and delicious souvenir will be carried at major airports starting in May. Japanese culture condensed in a green tea package would be an ideal souvenir to take home, so make sure to keep an eye out for it!
