Dear colleagues,

It is a great honor and privilege to invite you to the 5th International Workshop for the Study of Itch (IWSI), which will be held at Chinzan-so, Tokyo in October 25-28, 2009.

Since Prof. Gil Yosipovitch organized the first IWSI at Singapore in 2001, almost 8 years have passed. The IWSI has been held successfully every two years in Singapore (2001), Toyama (2003), Heidelberg (2005) and San Francisco (2007). In the meantime, our understanding of basic and clinical aspects of itch such as neural pathways, molecular mechanisms and therapeutic modalities has rapidly progressed. I am sure that the 5th IWSI will also be rich in new findings and most interesting both for basic researchers and clinicians. I hope that you will participate and make best use of the precious opportunity to discuss with world-class scientists dedicated to itch research.

The IWSI functions as the regular meeting of International Forum for the Study of Itch (IFSI), since it was founded in 2005 in an attempt to advance itch-related research and education and to promote treatment and clinical efforts to help alleviate this distressing symptom. I strongly recommend you to participate in the IFSI if you are interested in itch ( see URL: http://www.itchforum.net ).

I look forward to welcoming you in Tokyo in 2009.

With best wishes for a successful workshop,
