"Nebuta Matsuri"
The Nebuta Masturi (Nebuta Festival) is held in Aomori Prefecture, the northern-most part of the island of Honshu, from August 2nd through the 7th.
Along with the Tanabata Matsuri (in Sendai) and Kanto Matsuri (in Akita), the Nebuta Matsuri is one of the three major festivals of the Tohoku Region. The name is taken from “Nebuta”, gigantic lanterns inspired by characters from classic kabuki dramas, myths and history. It takes about one year to make a Nebuta, which is about five meters tall and is carried on a special float. As they are paraded through the streets, participants known as “Haneto” dance around the lanterns to the strains of lively music. All together, these create an exciting atmosphere that has made the festival a popular tourist destination for several decades.
